Square, rectangular and polygon pyramids with height and slant height

The Pyramid Generator draws a pyramid to scale on a rectangle or a regular polygon of 3 to 8 sides. Give a right pyramid its height or its slant height, and the other is worked out; the height is drawn dashed from the tip down to the base, and the slant height down the middle of the front face.

Teachers use it for volume and surface area questions, and for the Pythagorean theorem inside a pyramid: label the height x and give the slant height and base, or the other way round. Each measure can show its number, text like x, or nothing.

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between the height and the slant height?

The height goes straight down from the tip to the middle of the base. The slant height goes down the middle of a sloping face to the base’s edge. The generator draws both dashed. Together with half the base’s width, they make a right triangle.

Can I give the slant height and have the height worked out?

Yes. On a right pyramid, type either the height or the slant height and leave the other empty; it is worked out and shown faintly in the settings. A worked-out measure isn’t labeled until you choose Measure or Text on its label button.

Can I hide the height and show only the slant height?

Yes. Under Lines, turn off Height. The slant height stays, for surface area questions.

Why does a rectangular pyramid only show one slant height?

Its front and side faces slope differently, so they have different slant heights. The generator draws the one down the front face, to the middle of the front edge.
