Right and oblique cones with radius, height and slant height

The Cone Generator draws a cone to scale from its radius, or its diameter, and its height or its slant height, working out the other. The height and radius are drawn dashed with a right-angle square between them, so the right triangle inside the cone is there to see.

Teachers use it for volume and surface area questions and for the Pythagorean theorem: label the slant height x and give the height and radius. Label each measure with its number and unit, with text like r or x, or nothing.

What you can set

  • The radius, or the diameter instead, drawn across the base
  • The height or the slant height of a right cone, the other worked out
  • Right or oblique, leaning left or right, with the height and the lean
  • Each measure typed as a number, a fraction or with √, and labeled with its measure, text like x, or nothing
  • The back of the base circle dashed or left off, the dashed height, and right-angle squares
  • A unit (cm, m, mm, in, ft, yd, units or your own), rounding for worked-out measures, and labels you can drag on the figure

Copying, printing and sharing

Copy the figure straight into a test, worksheet or slide, or download it as a PNG or SVG. Printing the page prints just the figure. Share link copies the page’s address with your settings in it, so anyone who opens it sees this exact figure, and presets save settings you use often in your browser. It’s free, with no sign-up.

Frequently asked questions

How do I label the slant height as x?

Type the radius and the height, then click the label button beside Slant height, choose Text and type x. The slant height is worked out to draw the cone, but the figure shows only x.

Can I give the slant height instead of the height?

Yes. Type the slant height and leave the height empty, and the height is worked out. The slant height has to be longer than the radius.

How do I draw an oblique cone?

Under Stands, choose Oblique, then give the height and the lean. The height is drawn dashed from the tip down to the base’s extended line, and the lean along that line from the base’s center. An oblique cone has no single slant height, so it has none to label.

Can I show just the diameter?

Yes. Tick Give the diameter instead and type the diameter. It is drawn right across the base through its center.
